#ALSIceBucketChallenge

So I did it!
I learned something about the disease, donated some $$$ and dumped a bucket of water over my head. A large red bucket. Too bad my dog had plans of her own.  And despite my attempt to teach my husband how to be a cameraoperator, it was a BIG BIG FAIL! Check it out for yourself here:  http://youtu.be/itbOIi25aHQ

Thanks for checking it out. Now I challenge you to support a cause of your choice!

Peach Melon Salsa

This is a super easy, super delicious salsa and perfect way to end the summer season! It literally takes 5 minutes to make and costs under $10.00.

Ingredient:
1 Cantaloupe
1 Honeydew
1/2 Seedless Watermelon
4 Peaches
2 Limes
1/4 cup fresh Cilantro

Directions:
Chop cantaloupe, honeydew and melons to bite sized pieces. Peel peaches and cut into halves, grill until golden brown. Let sit for a few minutes until cool then cut into bite sized pieces. Toss all fruit in bowl. Squeeze both limes until juice coats fruit. Add fresh chopped cilantro to taste. Toss all ingredients in large bowl.

Really easy right? It pairs well with a jerk chicken and sangria. An affordable, delicious and each dish for an entertaining dinner.

HOT TIP: To prepare your peaches; X out to bottom breaking the skin, blanch in boiling hot water for 1 min then soak in ice water for 1 min. After this process drain and let them sit for just a minute and then peel. Then skin should fall right off!!

This is the start of something good!

As a philanthropic minded person, I always knew teaching my children to be a charitable was important. I just never knew it wouldn start so young! But when my mom shared with me a blog, I could not turn down such a cool opportunity.

Joan Meyers, a local photographer in Plymouth, Michigan, probably didn't realize her passion project would ignite giving back at a very young age. She has been a professional photographer for a number of years but very recently acquired her own studio space. When she open the doors, she couldn't help but offer an opportunity to help others in need. For what seems like a small donation of a blanket, she is offering a complementary photo session of your child and an 8 x 10 print.

Her unique black-and-white portrait style, shot on 35 mm film, quite possibly can change a child's life. In actuality, probably two. Every blanket donated goes to "Project Night Night" which provides night time materials to homeless children in our area ages 0-10. It's not just blankets, it's books and stuffed animals too. Items that children thrive on for comfort in a time when they are scared, insecure and in need. My favorite part is that the items stay local. You can check out more information on the project here:
http://projectnightnight.org

In addition to helping those homeless children, you're teaching the subjects too! By that I mean, when I pack my son up (when he's a little older) with blankets to give away, he's going to ask why. It's in those moments, parents who participate can share with them the importance of supporting those in need and giving what you're able to your community.

In a world where being seen a "charitable" is dumping ice over your head on social media or texting in a $1.00 to an unknown recipient, teaching the next generation to go the extra mile might save humanity. At the very least it will teach them humility. On the plus side, you're getting an adorable photo of your kids.

Go Joan M. Photography & thank you for making this your mission!

Weekend Check In

Having a blast up at Cheeseburger In Caseville in Key North, Michigan! The cardboard and duct tape race is done. Now were all out celebrating turning 30! I just had to post that as soon as I walked into the outside bar I got asked for a "selfie" for being a ginger! Lol

So here's my Ginger self:

& one with the Caseville Land Shark for good measure:

Night y'all!

#GingerProblems

Took a shower, put moisturizer on, go to dry hair and BAM! I got a SUNBURN during a rainstorm. How does that happen? It doesn't unless you're a ginger.
Shaking my head.

50 Thunderstorm Activities

Detroit's underwater again, I'm trapped inside & board so.... Why not make a like of 50 random things to do during a thunderstorm. After all, "Thunder is God bowling", if (you believe and there is a) God can have so much why can't we?!

1) Nap. Seriously, when's the last time you did that? And you can never have too much sleep. See Hayden's good at it:

2) Paint your dogs toe nails. Anyone else ever wanted to do that?
3) Don't have a dog? Go get one! They're pretty phenomenal. Loyal, obedient, loving, fuzzy & they'll let you paint their nails.

4) Watch a classic movie. There is plenty of time to watch movies but this time make a point to watch a classic like "Casablanca" or "Singing In The Rain".
5) Try a new recipe. If your pantry is stocked, try one of those fun foods you found on Pintrest.
6) Create a Frankenfood. If your pantry isn't stocked, create a contraption. Maybe you'll end up on a reality TV show!

7) Purge Your Closet. I feel like midsummer's light of day is  best time to let those old duds go.
8) eBay those items. Your new fall wardrobe can be in your closet if you play your cards right.
9) Play a Board Game. When's the last time you played Candy Land or Shutes and Ladder? If you don't have those Cards Against Humanity is an amazing game!
10) Inventory Your Survival Gear. No, I'm not crazy. Or an extreme survivalist. Just a big fan of The Walking Dead. And fellow fans can attest, occasionally you look at your shelves and say, "I could eat that in a zombie apocalypse".
11) Finish That Project. If you're like me, there's a bin in your house of "sick day projects". Finish one cause you know it's WAY harder to do them when you're actually sick. Why do you even have projects for when you're sick anyway?
12) Clean Out Your Cabinet. Unfortunately there are probably a dozen cosmetics and medicines in your bathroom vanity that are expired. Rule of thumb: if you dip your fingers in to get it out (like a tub of moisturizer) than you have 6 months to use it. The bacteria from your hands grows on your products. Don't take any medication after the expiration date. The old wives take about it being viable 6 months or even a year after expiration is not safe or effective.

13) Clean Up Your DVR.  I had 29 hours of Cup Cake Wars to work out. Oops.
14) Exercise. Just cause it's raining doesn't mean you can't do some yoga or start then squat challenge. Burn off calories and energy at the same time.
15) Clean Out Your Email. Maybe I'm the only person with 12,983 emails sitting there. Probably not. The way companies big and small send daily promotions in a fast, effective and cheap way, we probably all have a few to dump in the "trash".
16) Hone Some Photography Skills.  You've got to have a camera laying around, at least in your cell phone. Learn the new settings, take pictures of your puppies or at the very least photography expensive items you may need to make an insurance claim on when your house floods. Just don't forget to save the camera! Lol
17) Learn Morse Code.  I'm sure there's a full tutorial on google. Have you ever seen "Johnny Got His Gun"? Well, if you have you'll understand the importance if Morse Code.
18) Learn a New Song. There's got to be a song on whatever instrument you play that you've always wanted to learn. I've been trying to learn "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen for two years.... Seriously that's hard!
19) Back Up Your Cloud. Figure out wth that means and do it. That'll be first in my next rainy day.
20) Back Up Your Laptop. Seriously, no matter how many times I've been burned by this, I still don't do it regularly enough!
21) Take the Ab Challenge. There's about 100 fitness challenges out there, pick one, print it and hang it on your fridge. Highlight the days as you go along for visual motivation.

22) Pintrest. There's a whole world of motivation out there in a gloomy day. Skip Googling and head right to Pintrest for a photo over load of your preferred subject.
23) Print your photos. Speaking of photos, print them. Change out your living room frames, send some to grandma or just start an album.
24) Tackle a Wii Game. Weather is  Guitar Hero or Mario Kart learning and beating a video game can be good for  brain and your self esteem.
25) Visit The Musem. I'd be willing to bet there's a museum in your area that you haven't explored. Art, music, history, science choose your favorite and go for it. Beat the rainy day blues with education, creativity & motivation.
26) Try New Grub. While you're out, try some new local cuisine. There's two rules: it has to be a location new to you & you can't order your usual. Get off your keester, go out & explore!

27) Design Your Dream House. No seriously, a girl can dream right? Well, I have and I created my dream house while under the pale glow of lightening here: http://www.dreamhomesource.com.
28) Draw A Bubble Bath. Don't have the suds? No problem! While you fill the tub, grab about 1/2 cup of liquid bath soap and add 1 tablespoon of sugar, salt, oil or honey (actually a lot of things can go here) and 1 egg white. Accessories with a book or soothing music to relax or candels and you loved one for romance!
29) Make a List. There's probably 100 things you want to right down, so do it! Whether it's a Christmas or dream house wish list or a honey do home repair list, it's time to organize friend. Grab you yellow legal pad and go to town.
30) Compile a Cookbook. I've now done this 3 times. I took my husbands family recipe and made a bound collection for Christmas. My mother and I took recipe suggestions from multiple sides of our family and gave it away as a favor for my sister's bridal shower. Finally, gathered my husbands favorite recipes and mine and out them in a binder divided by "his", "hers" and "desserts" (the one thing we can agree on). They are great references and tokens!
31) Christmas Shop. Speaking of Christmas, let's tackle the list! I know it's terrible to shop so early in the year and it's like giving up on summer. But think about all the pros: you'll be organized and can enjoy the holidays, you'll save money, you'll actually have money at the end of the year bc you spent ahead, you can get thoughtful thought out gifts for your loved ones. I have a tote in my office closet that I throw gifts in to all year. As of 8/15 I have shopped for all my nieces and nephew completely.
32) Catch Up On Laundry. There's never enough time for that, especially in the middle of summer when you can go outside. Well you can't today so why not start a load. Maybe you can even sort it out first?!
33) Match the Socks. In my house there is a "no sock left behind" policy. That means all the unmatched knitties left behind in the load gets placed in a box for a rainy day. Time to organize, sort and cut the lost boys down to wash rags.
34) Deep condition your hair. There's a lot of at home remedies for deep condition your locks. For repair try running a 1/2 cup of mayonnaise from your fridge and brush it into your hair. For shine whip one-two egg yokes and brush into hair. For overall deep conditioning paint coconut oil into your locks. For all of these treatments wait up to 15 minutes, rinse, wash and condition if necessary.
35) Host A Tea Party. Cause girls are never too grown up to sip tea pinkies up! Call your girlfriends, brew some tea, make some finger sandwiches and gossip with your pearls on. A favorite finger sandwhich is cucumbers and cream cheese infused with lemon and dill on a white roll, delicious!

36) Drink Sampling Party. Call your friends, go buy some clear 6-8 oz cups, print some score cards and have at it! Now there's two ways to go about this. First, the G Rated version is the good ole Coke vs. Pepsi blind taste test. You can even add in a store brand cola for fun. Second, for the 21 and over crowd host a Six Pack Sampler Party where guests bring a 6 pack of their choice and throw it in the fridge. When you go for a drink, pick your poison from any inside. Or my personal favorite is Wine Around The World party where you give each guest attending a country and they bring a bottle from their land. Everyone who buys, tries! The score cards are cool because you can compare notes or maybe the buyers with the most votes wins. Just remember to drink responsibly, call a cab or throw a slumber party!
37) Visit the Library. Local or drive in to the city, it doesn't matter, go check out a book. It can be special interest, DIY, fiction, whatever you want. Escape the drizzle by curling up with a good book.
38) Outdoor Sports Inside. Sometimes it's just as fun to take the outdoors inside. You can rock climb, play racquet ball or swim at many local gyms and rec centers. They often offer day passes for $10-$20 and most offer child care during your visit.
39) Write Your Autobiograohy. Even if you don't end up rich and famous your kids and grand kids will want to know about your life. Maybe you'll find fulfillment or maybe you'll add a few things to your bucket list. At the very least it's an excercise in self evaluation and writing.
40) Bucket List. I know in my head I have about 100 items on my bucket list but there's nothing white like actually writing it down and crossing the tasks off one-by-one.

41) Binge Watch A New TV Series. There's MANY ways you can go with this! You can pick a classic like "I Love Lucy", go for something dramatic like "Law & Order", current like "Orange Is The Nee Black" or sci-if/fantasy like "Game Of Thrones" or "The Walking a Dead". So good!
42) Call Your Mother. Grandmother, long lost best friend from collage, etc. Take this time to catch up!
43) Teach Your Old Dog A New Trick. Prove that you cant is a myth. Don't have a dog or you haven't gotten it yet? Yeah your cat, bird or child. Knowledge is power!
44) Swap A Joint Massage. It is an awesome technique designed especially for your joints to relax and release. From your hips to your finger tips, slowly moving your joints back and forth and in circles clockwise and counterclockwise can release toxins and loosen up surrounding muscles. It's an extremely easy and relaxing technique to share with a loved one.
45) Give Away Back Massages. Not to your partner, to you peds and children. I bet that is something you don't do often. Briscoe and Mardi love their back massages. Hayden just giggles through his but I can't blame him, he is one ticklish baby!
46) Go Rollerskating. Anybody want to go relive middle school and blow off some energy? Call me!
47) Staycation. Go grab a last minute cheap hotel room for the night. Preferably nearby with an awesome pool, jacuzzi suite or fantasy room. Pretend your on a vacation when you're really at home. You can even stay at a local casino get two trips in one!
48) Go Fishing For Freebies. Its a time consuming job for someone who has nothing but time and isn't that exactly what a rain day is? Google freebie sites for samples, coupons, mail in offers, sweepstakes. I've gotten some great stuff for my son and about 1,500 return address labels.
49) Get Charitable. Read up on organizations that support causes you believe in. Find volunteer opportunities, facts to help share awareness on social media or make a donation. In the past week of rainy days I made a product donation to "Project Night Night", did some research on ALS, did the Ice Bucket Challenge with a donation and in honor of National a Dog Day today I spread the facts on dog abuse and where to find help. There's tons of worthy causes, find something to love and share with loved ones.

50) Meditate. Is there anything more soothing than listening to the sound of rain? Layback, close your eyes and listen. Let the sounds carry you away to a peaceful place. Breathe in your strength and breathe out your negativity. With each exhale let go of your stress, challenges and negative thoughts. When you're done you'll feel refreshed. Namaste bitches.

Vintage Travel Themed Bridal Shower

Full disclosure; this was a group effort. As much as I would love to believe I could have pulled this party off from the creative genius of my own mind, it was a collaboration of the wits and talent of women in my family known as The Party Planning Mafia.

When we sat down at the table meeting for this, I had no clue what a "Vintage Travel" theme was. But it really fit with the unique wedding my cousin had planned. Phil and his fiancé Misty married  on August 6th, 2014 in Sedona Arizona. Being from the Detroit area, it was a destination wedding. Then they'll be hosting a reception a few weeks after at their home. So, making a "Vintage Travel" theme to fit their bridal shower was perfect!

First my aunt started with some of the bride's favorite things. Her favorite color is yellow and we tied in a blue-green to accent as it is the dress color for the bridesmaids. As a health conscious bride, she enjoys shrimp and hummus. She wanted to incorporate both sides of the family. After that, she was hands off because she wanted to be surprised.

Menu
As showers traditionally go, we served lunch to all of the ladies. There was Greek salad, hummus, fruit, shrimp skewers and homemade chicken salad sandwiches on croissant two ways.

Christen Chicken Salad which had chicken breasts grilled, light light mayonnaise, walnuts, light red onion, celery and cherries or seedless grapes served with provolone and romaine lettuce on a mini croissant.

BLT Chicken Salad which is chicken breasts grilled, diced cherry tomatoes, diced bacon, light light mayonnaise, smidge of white wine vinegar and salt and pepper, served with provolone and romaine lettuce on a mini croissant.

To quench our guests thirst we served fruit infused water, iced tea and a champagne berry punch out of glass canisters. There was also a hot tea and coffee bar. For dessert guests noshed on a beautifully decorated yellow and teal flower-ette cake that the bride and groom cut for practice and assorted finger desserts.

Decorations
Details were certainly not overlooked in this department! Over the buffet hung carefully crafted paper lanterns and pom poms in the teal and yellow along with handmade white heart garland. Over the dessert table was a custom-made "postcard" of sorts that featured both Phil and Misty's initials made from cut maps and highlighted Sedona scenery. To tie in both sides of the family we used vintage pictures of marriages from either side on the living room mantle. In the dining areas there were two focal points of decoration which included: a vintage map, custom Phil and Misty passports, globe, black and white family photos and antique accessories like a camera and suitcase. Down the center of the clothes tables were potted cactus to represent the desert which doubled as guests parting favors. Finally, the table would not be complete without confetti!

Activities
What is party without games? If there is one thing our family has mastered it is the art of skillfully crafting entertainment for the masses. The first game was taking Misty's childhood pastime of dressing up as a bride and giving it a silly twist. At each place setting sat a questionnaire for guests to fill out about Phil and Mistys relationship (their first date place, where they met, favorite date night, etc.). The groom to be was questioned ahead of time on camera, then The bride was quized. For every answer she got wrong she had to wear a piece of "goofy" clothing or accessories from a suit case. The guests earned a point for every questions they got right and the guest with the most points won a prize! We also had a "Pass This Book" game (which is a simple solution for guests to entertain themselves as hosts replenish food, move gifts, set up the next phase of the party, etc). Ours was in a vintage map photo album and filled with personalized rhymes about the bride with accompanying photos. For example: "Being on water is in Phil's blood, that is to say when he's not playing in mud. In his Donzi he's traveled the lakes greater, just like his Grandpa who worked on a freighter. Luckily, Misty loves it too or he'd be 'In Too Deep'. He loves his boat more than anything, including his Jeep. Pass this book to the person who's traveled the longest on a boat". It was a very detailed touch that let's the guests know a little bit more about the couples life together.

In the end, the shower was a huge success! "Vintage Travel" ended up being quite the unique and unexpected but fun theme to work with. The great part is for all your party planners out there, it's easy to personalize.

If it's a tropical destination wedding you can do pictures from their respective families on the beach or have the bride dress up in a hula skirt and sunglasses. If it's an Asian destination have their local cuisine and give the guests bamboo shoots for favors. There are a lot of customizable attributes to play with.

DIY Jewelry Organizer

For work I have to wear black and white. Sure, I can jazz it up with the jewelry but on a typical day to day basis, I work black and white! For easy access, I decided to hang a DIY jewelry holder.

What you need:
Cork bulletin board (size is up to you)
Fabric
A spool of ribbon or two
Stapler and staples
Hot glue gun and sticks
Paper slip
Scissors
Push pins

How to:
1) Cut your fabric to bulletin board size.
2) Lay your board on a flat surface and place your fabric on top.
3) Staple your fabric to the board, making sure to line them up evenly.
4) Take ribbon and trim to cover the gap between fabric and board and cover staples. Then glue into place.
5) Flip board over, bend paper clip to a "v" shape and bend the bottom point out. Lay flat on the board so "v" sticks out. Glue into place. This will be your hanging hook.
6) Stagger push pins to hold jewelry according to pieces.
7) Hang on wall and marvel at your work!

Time: 15 mins.

The best part is you can custome the decorationa to fit your personal style. You can also use your preferred size board to fit your needs.

This is a great, inexpensive way to have a fun and practical piece!

The Coupner's Garage Sale

This is so cool!

So, I'm always looking for a sale. Let's be real, who isn't? I get such a rush from getting a good deal. When someone compliments my outfit I can't help but respond where I got it and and what steal I got away with. When I get home from shopping I gloat to my husband through our game "Guess How Much I Paid For It?". Nothing is better than when he's close but I have him beat.

My thriftiness has gained me a reputation. Maybe its the small stock pile in my basement of supplies. Or that next summer's clothes in his closet.  At some point people even started asking for help!
It once led me to give coupon in a try. Now, I can get a good deal but nothing like carts of groceries for free. Truth be told, a lot of things like cat liter just weren't neccessary and "ain't nobody got time for that"! But I have mad respect for those who can.

My thriftiness got me an invite to a garage sale. Alright, if someone's inviting me to a garage sale, I feel like it's worth going to check it out. Boy am I glad I did!

Today, I met a four generation family of extreme couponers. Who in all reality should have a show. They spend all year, in sport (or maybe profession) extreme couponing. They stock pile, literally, thousands of products from Panteen Pro V shampoo and Crest 3D whitening strips to Huggies diapers and L'Oreal eye shadow. They get deals I had never seen before like Revlon tweezers and child movie DVDs.  Then, drum roll please.... they throw a garage sale!

I thought I got a deal before? Not like this! Here is retail $148.00 (give or take a few):
Guess how much I paid for it?! $45.00!!!!

This is such a cool new wave of shopping, the Couponer's Garage Sale (as I have now named it).
Here is the one I went to today. And it's happening all over, I found another in my area tomorrow:

Pros to the Coupner's Garage Sale:
1) Saves consumer money. They're doing the work for you and selling at a severaly discounted rate.
2) Saves time shopping. You can go pick up for favorites and loyal brands in one spot.
3) Better ability to stock up. Since they buy so many and their so cheap you can buy 10 where you'd normally buy 2.
4) Experience new products without loosing more than you gain. I grabbed a hair mask that I've been looking to try at 20% of the retail value.
5) Coupon use causes companies to produce more coupons. Simple supply and demand. If corporations pay advertisers to create sales driving campaigns and they work, they'll pay for more.
6) Its better for the environment. Think about it. The paper is getting used and recyled (cause that's what a lot of manufacturers do). It causes less people to drive less places because you can get so many products from different stores in one place. And to boot, companies aren't mailing boxes of unsold merchandise, on trucks, back to manufacturers who then mail them, on trucks, to discount retailers or worse online.
7) It stimulates the economy. At the very least your paying cents for carts of products which stores are profiting from. The people pay cash which causes couponers to go spend more!

Cons to the Coupner's Garage Sale
1) Products expire! Check your labels before you buy. They may have expired in the store, in the haul or will at your house in 2 weeks. It's not a steal if you can't use it. :-)
2) Quantity over quality. Couponers need quantity to get the deal, so they're not looking closely at each individual item. I found a "used" deoterant at the sale today, which was probably just smelled in the store but you never know.
3) Quality control. Retailers know how to ship, store and handle products to their best quality. After all, it is not just the brands but the retailers reputation at stake. With so many products, even the best couponers can't store them all at their best temperature or conditions.
4) Price scam. Do your homework and don't be fooled. I'm sure there are people, like with any good thing, that will try to take advantage. Just know what you can get your favorite products for and don't pay it. Honestly, looking into this I haven't seen any price I can come close to yet!

At the end of the day, this is a super cool concept. It's mutually beneficial and saves you a little time and money. And hey, why not let someone do the work for you? Extreme couponing is hard!
